A Chief Magistrate Court in Jos on Tuesday sentenced a 28-year-old trader, Zakariah Markus, to one year imprisonment for illegal possession of locally made pistol and one round of cartridge.
The Magistrate, Roseline Baraje, however, gave him an option of N10,000 fine.
Baraje said that the judgment would serve as deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such illegal act.\
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ijuptil Thawur, had told the court that the case was reported on Oct.1, 2019 at Operation Safe Haven in Jos and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for prosecution
Thawur said that while some officers were on routine patrol along Gada Biu Road, Jos, they intercepted the accused and upon interrogation a search was conducted on him and he was found with pistol without a licence.
On arraignment, the accused pleaded guilty to the offence which the prosecutor said was contrary to Sections 3 and 8 and punishable under Section 27 (1) (a) (i) (b) (II) (v) of the Fire Arms Act Cap.
